| The Cix VFR Club Flight Training Manual |
Real world flight training includes a significant of theory learning - "Ground School" as it is called. The Club Flight Training Manual is a comprehensive series of Flight Training tutorials. They are based on the real world UK CAA flight training syllabus, and cover every aspect of learning to fly a light aircraft on Flight Simulator. |
| VATSIM Pilot Resource Centre |
What VATSIM is and how it works. How you the pilot interact with other pilots and Air Traffic Control (ATC), carry out instructions, know where you can go and what you can do, without interfering with other members' enjoyment. The source of all this knowledge is VATSIM's own Pilot Resource Centre. Go there before you fly anywhere on line. |
| The Radiotelephony Manual |
The use of voice communications adds a great deal of realism to the Flightsim world. Pilots feel the same pressure to perfiorm properly as do real world pilots To help members, we have produced a tutorial, based on real world practice, but adapted for use on VATSIM. |
| The Airborne Flight Plan |
The Airborne Flight Plan is the most frequently used piece of ATC dialogue, and needs to be learned and well rehearsed. |
| Using Squawkbox 3 |
Getting started with VATSIM requires installation of a special application to connect the pilot to the VATSIM servers via Flight Simulator's inbuilt multiplayer function. One of the two programmes available is called "Squawkbox" and the current version is version 3. |
| Using FSInn |
The other programme available for connecting to Vatsim is called FSInn. Which one of these programmes to use boils down to personal preference. |
| FSNet Copilot |
The excellent FSNet Copilot makes it possible for two pilots, "instructor" and "student", to fly in one aircraft, sharing the flying in the same cockpit. WEorks with FS9 only. |
| FSX Cockpit Sharing and Vatsim |
Cockpit Sharing is a built in feature of FSX. Instructor and student can connect either via a direct peer to peer connection, or when the student is ready for the realism to be increased, via Vatsim. They then can take advantage of live ATC as described above. |
Flight Planner 812
The current version (11/05/08) consists of Software Version 8.10 and
Database version 8.12 |
A flight planning spreadsheet with built in database. The database contains over 1000 records including most UK airfields, VORs and NDBs, Visual Reference Points and over 100 farm strips. Enter your departure and destination aerodromes, en route waypoints and winds and the programme creates your flight plan and a Pilots Log which can be printed out. It comes with a separate Instruction document (pdf file). Please always use the current version. |
| Instrument Flight |
This a complex technical document used by a real world pilot during instrument training. Pilots flying with VATSIM are recommended to have at least this level of knowledge if flying on instruments. However, it is not a Club requirement. If it seems too complex to you, leave it until you have more experience. |
| VOR Tracking |
VFR navigation can be considerably helped by partial use of radio navigation aids (navaids). This tutorial explains how to track to or from a VOR and how to use two VORs to get a position fix. For a full instrument flight tutorial, see the item below. |
| Peer-to-Peer Connections |
An explanation of technical networking issues which members will find useful if they are planning Multiplayer Peer-to-Peer connections over the Internet |
| Vatsim Setup 2003.pdf |
Getting started with VATSIM using Squawkbox 2.xx - now obsolete, but file retained for reference. |
