The Philosophy of Club Management

The Management Team are constantly reviewing Club activities and trying to ensure that members are able to enjoy Club life, which, after all, is what we are about. We do not hold regular meetings, because we have never found the need. Very occasionally we will have a TeamSpeak meeting - about once a year on average, but these are not usually minuted. They are held mainly to save time and lots of emails or PMs flying around to deal with an important issue - e.g. how to go about being a VATSIM Training Organisation. Most of our discussions are via PM in a private board in the forum. It is, and always has been, a very deliberate policy to manage with a light touch and to include rather than exclude as many activities as we can within our overall "mission" to be a Light Aircraft Flying Club.

Most MT members access the forum at least daily, and sometimes hourly. Controversial forum posts from members are always picked up and discussed among the Team to see if we need to improve anything, or to respond in any other way. New ideas from members are always discussed, and if they are in the interests of a majority of members, in our judgement, then those ideas are implemented. Sometimes those ideas prove not to work out, but it doesn't stop us considering any ideas. Other ideas will be considered non-starters quite quickly, but we would always offer an explanation if asked. We accept that it may be better to proactively provide an explanation for ideas which are not progressed.

A good example of this is the Screenshot Competition. This was an idea for which there was much initial support, so it was implemented. With the forum upgrade to SMF version 2, the competition has been moved into the forum to raise its profile with members. Support from the membership, however, in the form of submitting entries, has been very weak. This is a disappointment which we have to accept along with the many more successful ideas. There is no suggestion that the screenshot competition will be dropped, by the way.

Management Team members are chosen very carefully because the worst thing that can happen in any Club is divisiveness in its management. Five of the seven MT members are Club founder members, so have a long history of mutual respect and understanding. That gives the Club a very secure foundation. In addition, each one brings a specific and essential skill to the Club. It also means that new MT members are chosen with very great care.

Peter Dodds Chief Executive Officer, & Chief Flying Instructor

Founder member of the club and a Flight Simulator enthusiast since 1991, Peter discovered VATSIM in 2003. He is a real world PPL with some 400 hours. A member of the Gemini Simulations team which pioneered UK VFR scenery for FS4, he has dabbled in many aspects of FS including panel building, gauge design and aircraft painting. Peter manages the Club´s training programme. A Technical Author by profession, he writes for Computer Pilot magazine and produces most of the Club´s documentation and training material. He doesn´t much like being called "Pete". Peter created the club web site and was Webmaster until September 2008. From September 2008 until June 2009, in addition to his other roles, Peter took responsibility for the Club´s Photo Gallery.

Tony Driver Operations Director & Webmaster

Founder member Tony learned much about flying and navigating in the Air Training Corps in the early 1950´s, followed by twelve years service in the RAF, working mainly on ground to air communications equipment. Now retired, after 27 years with IBM and 5 years IT contracting, he has been interested in Flight Simulation since the mid 1980´s. Qualified virtual PPL with Instrument and Commercial Pilot ratings, he joined VATSIM in 2003. Tony has served the club as Membership Secretary and Events/Operations Manager before becoming Operations Director. Until September 2008 Tony also acted as Events Manager. From September 2008, in addition to his role as Operations Director, Tony has taken responsibility for maintenance and further development of the Club´s Web Site.

Tim Arnot Events Manager

A software Engineer by day, Tim is a real world PPL with about 130 hours. He discovered the joys and frustrations of flight sim in 2003, with FS9. It´s rumoured that he only started flying for real because he couldn´t land the plane in FS and wanted some "proper instruction"! Tim, also a founder mermber, is known throughout the club for his excellent screenshots, and he has won several awards on the SimFlight monthly screenshot competition. Tim particularly enjoys taking small planes on long virtual tours across the globe, covering many thousands of miles. And yes, he can now land one, really. Until September 2008 Tim was our Photo Gallery editor, where he did sterling work sorting, editing, and presenting images provided by club members for inclusion on the web site.

Pete Allnutt Forum Manager

Pete is a founder member of the club who has been flight simming since the mid 1980s starting with "Aviator" the flight sim programme for the BBC Micro with its wire frame graphics. He didn´t take it too seriously until the formation of the CIX VFR club and his discovery of VATSIM. He is also a virtual (car) racing driver as well as flight simmer. As well as his "official" duties above, Pete also manages the Club´s TeamSpeak server and designed the club´s PIREP flight reporting system. He is quite happy to be called Pete!

Ruth McTighe Manager Without Portfolio & Assistant Webmistress

A founder member of the club who discovered flight simming via ATC sims, Ruth joined VATSIM shortly after it opened in 2001, and has served on both the UK staff and the international Board of Governors. Ruth is one of the few women in VATSIM, and so far the only one in this club. She never got further than a trial lesson in a real aircraft due to airsickness, but does hold a Certificate in Aviation Medicine. She joined the management team in May 2009, providing her experience of VATSIM organisation for the club´s benefit. Following her Open University successes she was offered and accepted the role of Assistant Webmistress.

Melvyn Kirk Membership Secretary, QFI (SEP), & Training Administrator

Now retired, Mel was an Electrical Engineer. He was an auxiliary Coastguard for over 20 years. The last 10 of these as Auxiliary in charge of his local station at Donna Nook, which is situated at the mouth of the River Humber. He is married with two sons and two grandsons. He says: "Our family doesn't seem to be able to produce girls." He is a keen motorcyclist and gardener. He discovered Flight simulation only in 2009, when his grandchildren presented him with a copy of FSX as a Christmas present. Following a successful trial period as a "new member settling in" instructor and latterly a VATSIM P1 examiner, Mel was promoted to a full QFI (Qualified Flying Instructor) for Single Engined Piston Aircraft (SEP) in September 2011. Mel is an active member of the 2-4-CIX Display Team, leading the Chipmunks section.

Mark Brown Publicity Manager

Mark has been an aviation enthusiast since childhood, some of his earliest memories being watching DC-3s and 707s at the local airport. He started flight simulation with the Aviator game on the BBC Micro, but didn't become "hooked" till he discovered VATSIM and was invited to join the club by Gray Brett. Apart from soloing in a glider at the age of 15 and gaining his pilot navigation wings with the air cadets, Mark has no real-world flying experience. However, with a degree in avionics engineering and a doctorate, he has a broad base of aviation technical knowledge, having worked in areas including flight control, wind tunnels, display design and ATC data link. Mark lives in Tokyo, and gets up early on Saturday mornings to participate in the club's Biggin Night. He is currently into helicopters.

Simon Marshall Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI)

Simon started virtual flying in the days of the BBC Micro and Avaitor. His FS experiance goes from the first version of MS FS upto FSX. He has flown most aircraft from J-3's upto and including 737s (PDMG). Whilst he hasn't flown anything larger then a Twin Otter for several years, and doesn't intend to, he has reasonable IFR skills as he used to fly IFR flights almost excusivly before joining the CIX VFR Club in October 2008. Simon was made a QFI in July 2011.

Max Symons 2-4-CIX Team Leader (wef 15 Nov 2011)

Max started small. He used to design (including stress calcs), build, fly and perform crash investigations on fixed wing Radio Controlled aeroplanes up to about 5ft wingspan. He has flown several times with a colleague in a micro-light Zenair Zodiac 601UL. Before joining the CIX VFR Club in October 2008, his FS experience was mainly flying Round Britain in the Cessna 172 flying from small strip to small strip, and navigating using an AA atlas and totally avoiding using the inbuilt GPS. When he discovered a 601XL for FS9 on Zenithair's WEB site, he converted it for FSX, and made it resemble the 601UL, and uploaded it to the AVSIM site as a "Zenair Zodiac 601". He has been an active member of the 2-4-CIX Display Team since October 2010, when he created an altimeter to assist with low flying, and started his leadership role in December 2010, by providing a display checklist for the team.

Basil Hancock 2-4-CIX Deputy Team Leader

Born and raised in Durban, South Africa, Basil was called up to National Service after schooling at Kearney College. He volunteered for the Parachute Battalion, and qualified in May 1973 as a "Parabat" (short for Parachute Battalion). His first few jumps were from a DC3, hence his passion for flying it in FS. He did a few tours of duty in South West Africa during the bush war, before moving into a career in accounting (QBE). He migrated to Blighty in 1999 and has now settled into being an Excel specialist for a Finance House. His introduction to flightsimming was on FS1 using IBM clone computors. He discovered Warbirds Online and was hooked, flying lengthy B17 missions. Basil joined Vatsim in 2002 but wasn't active until finding the CIX VFR Club, and then his virtual civil aviation took off. He joined the 2-4-CIX team and loved it, his main interest being in the Warbirds section. Basil's real world flying is limited to 30 Launches in a K13 Glider out of Shennington.
