Happy Christmas to All Members!
The club wishes all members a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. The year 2004 was a very successful inaugural year. Let's make 2005 as good or better.
Rave reviews for new realAir (and Club) aircraft!

Cix VFR Club members are familiar with the RealAir Cessna 172. Now (December 2004) RealAir have just released a Mark XIV Spitfire, and club member Tony Driver has "bought" one. Expect to see it in the skies over Worcestershire and Gloucestershire on Tuesday 14th December. Tony says "I'm really enjoying this new aircraft. but following years of simulator experience, my instinct
tells me this is just right. I think it's their best yet, and I'm not
alone. There is a review in the new PC Pilot magazine which gives it 5/5, and a wonderfully enthuisiastic review by a retired Spitfire display pilot copied from AVSIM on the RealAir website."

New Club Web Domain

From December 3rd 2004, thanks to the generosity of one of our members, we now have our own domain, www.cixvfrclub.org.uk. Well of course you know that, because you are reading this. Bookmark it now, tell your friends, mention it on the VATSIM forums. Anyone that has that slightly sadistic streak of the editorial critic is welcome to email the webmaster with any broken links, missing pictures etc., which may have resulted from the move. It is important to mention in this regard, our sincere thanks to Tim Benham, who has hosted our site on his own servers since last March, and will continue to host our Teamspeak server. Many thanks Tim for your continued support and contribution. Happy flying.everyone.

Associate Members
Club membership has been limited, for largely practical reasons, to members of Cix. Much of the interaction between members takes place in the Cix conference - a sort of forum, but better. However, we have agreed to allow Associate Members, who will enjoy all the priveleges of full membership except the conference. We already have two Associate Members, and another person is thinking about it.
Visitors Praise "Biggin Bump" Night
Visitors to Biggin Hill have contacted the Club and told us how much they enjoyed joining in with our "Circuits and Bumps" night on 23rd September. It was well attended, with eight aircraft taking part including five club members.
Essex Night 19th September
This is a VATSIm event that we might like to join in with. Tony Driver is planning to fly from either Southend or Bgiggin Hill to Cambridge. Any member is very welcome to join him, he says. FSNav Flight plans are available on the Downloads page.

Links Page

The links page is now starting to be developed. Any essential, useful or simply interesting aviation or flight Simulation related links can be emailed to the webmaster. see Links(16/09/04)
Leeds-Bradford Flyin 12th September
Operating between 18:30 and 21:30 zulu, the Fly-In will be informal and pilots from around the world are welcome to fly in to sample the delights of one of the North’s leading international airports. Both fixed wing and Helicopters are welcome; there is ample parking on the south side of the airfield. Both Approach and Tower will be manned. Download info (pdf file).
...and Finally

To celebrate the return of the real world G-GYAV from the Isle of Man on 31st August, Peter Dodds has finally completed the rework of the Cessna 172N panel. Every gauge has been modified, controls remodelled to look more like the real Cessna controls, and several completely new gauges created. For those who prefer the slightly more "weathered" look of an older aircraft - this panel has that look about it. Engine controls now include a primer for starting and a carburettor heat control. The panel also, realistically, lacks all the modern GPS, moving map, ATC and other "gizmos", requiring the pilot to use his paper map for VFR flight, and, naturally, to use VATSIM for ATC cover! Download a copy.

Confliction Forces Bizjet Go-around
Tim Slater, our "resident" ATCO at Biggin Hill had a critical piece of traffic handling to manage during his mock Controller exam on 4th August.
Ruth McTighe (on Thames Radar) reports "Tim did a great job. G-BYMB had to go-around, because of an aircraft which entered the runway before receiving his take-off clearance. This caused a real confliction problem, because the IFR arrivals for 03, come down the ILS for 21, and then break off to a left hand visual circuit for 03. So we potentially had G-BYMB turning left crosswind on the go-around just in front of a Bizjet on an instrument approach, travelling at a much faster speed." It was solved by sending the Bizjet around for another go"
The Real World doesn't have all the traffic problems! (I bet the Bizjet pilot's language was interesting).
Club aircraft G-XAJD and G-BYMB took part in the exercise.
Silly Season
In the world of Journalism, we are now in the silly season, so we ought to be reporting on the bedroom antics of famous people (real or imaginary). Far more interesting is the Professional Pilots Rumour Network. take a look sometime!
Lots More ATC Cover for the Club

Vatsim-UK now has "regional nights". Thursday is London night, which covers anything in the London and City control zones, plus other London area airports like Biggin Hill. Wednesday night is Essex night, which is Stansted, Luton and Cambridge. the Club has already taken advantage of this on 21st July, when Tony Driver lead a fleet of four from Luton to Rochester.
VATSIM UKs Events Co-ordinator Nick Cunnington (G-TAAL) has emailed the Club to thank members for supporting the Kemble event. He also offered to help organise ATC cover for any of our events in the future - a very generous and warmly accepted offer.

Club adds weight to the Rally

Five club aircraft flew in convoy to Kemble on Sunday 11th July for the Vatsim equivalent of the Popular Flying Association's annual Rally at Kemble in Gloucestershire. The club aircraft swelled the numbers of aircraft which attended from six to eleven. members agreed it was our most successful, but also our most ambitious, trip to date. Nevertheless it went off without a hitch.  11/07/04

Diamond Katana DA20 G-BYMB (pilot Tim Arnott) departing homeward from Kemble.

Four other aircraft which attended the event can also be seen airborne.

Aircraft taking part were: -
From the club
G-BYMB - DA20
G-GYAV - C172
G-SPCA - C172
G-XAJD - C172
VH-DAH - Mooney B

Others:
G-HANA - Beech Baron
G-HENC - Beech Baron
G-TAAL - C172
G-DIVA - C172
G-WAVI - PA17
G-RAMI - Jetranger

Exeter Outing Postponed
The club outing to Exeter, planned for June 25th, has been postponed as it has not yet been possible to set up the coordinated ATC required. It will be re-arranged as soon as possible.
Ruth Tries Real Flying

On May 29th, member Ruth McTighe had a trial lesson in a real aeroplane - a Piper Warrior. She repeated one of the Club's early trips, flying from Biggin Hill to Rochester. Ruth described the flight, in poor visibility, as "very interesting".

It is perhaps not surprising that many Flight Simmers go on to fly in the real world. After all, the desire to see what it is really like must be strong in everyone who has mastered the initial aspects of flight on a computer. The cost of real flying is perceived as a significant stumbling block, but apart from the initial outlay for training which is indeed hefty, flying can be maintained within the bounds of the average income with some adjustment. New cars, more than one holiday a year, frequent eating out, smoking and drinking are all pleasures which can be put aside if you desperately want to fly and still keep the children fed and clothed. What is certain, though, is that almost everyone who " has a go" gets hooked, so you do need family involvement and agreement. 30/05/04

Other Flying Members

Tim Arnot is learning to fly in a Diamond Katana DA20 at Enstone Aerodrome in Oxfordshire. He is now well into the "circuits and bumps" element of his training, which leads to that magical day - First Solo! Read all about it on his own web site.

Peter Dodds is a member of Southport and Merseyside Aero Club, and flies the real G-GYAV out of Liverpool Airport. He has been flying for 11 years and has over 320 hours. He has flown seven different types of aircraft, including a vintage Tiger Moth..

David Humble flies a combination of Piper Arrows and Warriors with an occasional Cessna 150 out of Bankstown Airport, Sydney, New South Wales. Check out Schofields Flying Club

Paul Carrington did some gliding "many years ago" in the RAF.

Web Sites Expanding
As we have more events, the web site keeps growing. Check out new content in the Picture Galleries and Training pages. Member Tim Arnot now (4th June) has a web site which includes the journal of his flying training (see above).
Successful Sydney Sortie
On 28th May, three members had an enjoyable flight from Sydney to Bankstown and return, guided by another Cix VFR Club member, David Humble, who lives in Sydney and is a Senior Student Air Traffic Controller with vatpac - the Pacific Area branch of Vatsim. It does seem remarkable that we could be vectored onto approach at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport's Runway 25 by an ATCO who was physically not 3 miles away, but 10,000! (Full report in Pictures).28/05/04
Panel Update
The new Cessna 172 panel is progressing. All the switches have now been upgraded. There is just a small problem to solve - the fuel gauges show half full when the tanks are full.
More photographs of Alpha Victor have also been taken to improve the switches and add fuses and other panel paraphernalia. They will be added prior to launch.
Ruth to the Rescue!

Vatsim Deputy Director and Cix VFR Club member Ruth McTighe (G-RMCT) will be producing some of the missing pages from this site over the next few weeks, in particular the page of links to Simulated Aviation (and real World Aviation) sites of interest and importance to us, and the "Notams" page where updated information from Vatsim and other organisations world wide will be posted.

Cessna 172N Panel Progress

After some frustrating hours with an inferior panel design package, the panel for G-GYAV and other Club 172Ns is progressing well. The gauges and switches etc need to be edited to remove extraneous phillips screws, and the fuel gauges need recalibrating to reflect the 156 litres (49 US gallons) maximum fuel capacity of the 172N  .In addition, features incompatible with the Cessna 172N (e.g. an autopilot) have been disabled or removed from the aircraft design.

Club Outing Tuesday 4th May
A good evening was had by five members in somewhat gusty conditions. Fortunately, the 14 knot wind was more or less down the runway for landing. We were still able to carry out some general handling exercises, exploring the more extreme things you can do to an aircraft. Whilst exploring the slow flight characteristics, Ruth McTighe managed a stall (by accident) and recovery (by design!).

Our next outing might be around Sydney with member dave Humble as our ATC controller at Sydney Airport.

Thank You John
The Club has John Woodside to thank for the superb paint job on G-CIXN seen on the web site home page. John is a mine of useful information about all things aviation real or virtual (see links page for web contact details).
Club Aircraft enjoy new look
Design work is continuing on the new look for club Cessna 172s. A preview of the external paint scheme is already on the home page, but below is a view of the preliminary panel background, based on photographs of a real world Cessna 172N - G-GYAV, also seen below.

Spitfire makes emergency landing
Shortly after a practice aerobatics session at Gloucestershire, on Tuesday 21st December pilot Tony Driver experienced engine failure in his new Spitfire Mk XIV. Tony says "I took off normally, raised the flaps and was climbing away when the engine spluttered and stopped abruptly - at only about 100 ft above the end of the runway. I got my MAYDAY call in, selected the nearest open space and got down in one piece." Tony believes that it may have been a fuel starvation problem following a possible wrong tank selection. "It hasn't put me off this wonderful aircraft", he said afterwards.

Tim Arnot flew over to guide in the Emergency Services, but they weren't needed.

New Associate Member
Will members please give a warm welcome to Martin Leat, veteran VATSIMmer who has joined the club. Martin flies a Cessna 172SP G-LEAT. Look out for him at our events.
Taildraggers to Feature in a Club Event
Don't miss the great event on Tuesday 14th December when we will be wheeling out those vintage flying machines. Get out the oily rag, helmet and goggles and "Contact!" - join us at Enstone for the flight, or visit us at Gloucestershire at the end of the evening.
Inaugural Gloucestershire Meeting a Great Success

Five members and 3 other aircraft descended on Gloucestershire Airport on Tuesday 7th December for a memorable fly-in and Champagne supper. There were controllers on line at Gloucestershire, Bristol and Wellesbourne Mountford, giving us particularly good ATC cover. Our grateful thanks to them all.

Our next planned event is a Piper Cub evening on 14th December - see the Events page.

New Base at Gloucestershire
The Club has decided to open a second base, at Gloucestershire Airport (EGBJ). We have found in recent weeks that if Biggin Hill is not manned by ATC, very often Gloucestershire is, and in particularly, Gloucestershire is open every Tuesday evening, In future therefore, when we plan our own events, we have the choice of starting from Gloucestershire or Biggin Hill. For the shorter outings, Gloucestershire gives a choice of some interesting local destinations, and is less constrained by the congested airspace around London which affects Biggin Hill. Biggin Hill still has its regular "Biggin Nights" and there are ongoing "Essex Nights" so we will continue to use Biggin Hill when we join in those events, and when we introduce ourselves to our European friends (a flyout over the Channel is planned for sometime this winter.)
A Quiet Time, this Autumn
Due to pressure of work, gremlins in their PCs, or working away from home, several of our members have not been around much lately. As a consequence, we have not organised any of our own events for a while. However, the Club has not been inactive, and those members who could have joined in with some of the many UK VATSIM events which have been organised. As soon as pressures in various areas ease, we will be organising our events again, some of them from the thriving Gloucestershire Airport.
Project Biggin

VATSIM has recently announced that they will try and privide ATC cover at Biggin Hill. From the Forum: "PROJECT BIGGIN is an attempt to increase the stock of Biggin Hill on VATSIM and encourage its use as a GA and bizjet airfield. We would like to have BIG TWR or APP manned everynight plus THAMES (Radar). This should start encouraging traffic. There are already a couple of "flying clubs" based at
Biggin (that's us - Ed.) and I'm sure they'd fly more if we gave more service."

We will certainly try!

Update from the Antipodes
Member David Humble is currently working in Tasmania, installing a new control and protection system for a power transmission line. In his spare time he's been checking out the local talent and reports back. "George Town, (North Tasmania on the banks of the Tamar) is a small airfield specialising inultralights - not a Cessna or Piper in sight. Not to let the grass stay under his feet, he's done a conversion to ultralights.

As can be seen from the attached photo, the Jabaru looks
like a diminutive C150, David says that for most operations it flies like one. The biggest difference is the weight. Adjust power and the speed changes almost immediately. The flare needs to be done a lot closer to the ground as there is very little momentum to keep you flying. Gusts will knock the plane around a lot until all the wheels are on the ground.

After a week of rain and high winds David was once again forced to go to George Town Airstrip. (It's a nasty addiction, flying!) A quick couple of circuits and it was time for 1st solo. The following picture was taken afterwards. David is the taller bearded one.)
Ed: We all seem to have that sort of picture taken, David. The taller bearded one below is yours truly on 1st August 1994.
Computer Pilot
Club member Peter Dodds has been commissioned to write two articles for Computer Pilot, the only monthly-published Flight-sim magazine. The first, on the FS help and Learning Centre will be in the October Issue, out very soon. The second, due in the November issue, is on virtual flying in the UK.
Essex Night Sunday 19th September
Another Sunday outing, and it looks like ATC will be well manned tghis time ( it was a bit thin last time). Member Tony Driver fancies a trip to Cambridge via Stansted or Luton, should anyone care to join him. Start at Biggin Hill, or, if Biggin is not manned, Southend..
From 1800 - 2100 Zulu, 1900 - 2200 BST.

Files Page Now on the site - see Downloads
Look out for a new "Files" option on the site very soon, to replace the "Software" option. This page will have links to download from one place all the information which is available to Club members. 080904
Congratulations Tim

Cix VFR Club member Tim Arnot made his real world first solo on Tuesday 20th July at Wellesbourne Mountford in Diamond Katana DA20 G-BYMB based at Enstone. Contratulations to Tim from all club members. We are taking bets as to how long the grin lasts.
Coincidentally, PPL member Peter Dodds had flown to Wellesbourne and only realised he was watching the lead up to this momentous event as he sat in the cafe eating a burger watching a Katana doing circuits. When he realised it was G-BYMB he thought it mght be Tim, but unfortunately had to leave before the actual solo took place.

Blackpool
The National Flight Simulator show took place over the weekend of 19th/20th June at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. See feature article..
Oh Dear!
The real world G-GYAV had a mishap at Ronaldsway on Sunday 13th June, when ground subsided under the nosewheel, resulting in a prop-strike.
Exeter Outing
Let's make this one a really big turn-out as a lot of Vatsim eyes will be on this particular evening. We hope to have full ATC cover all the way.
As Real As It Gets
Below are two pictures of Sydney harbour. One is real, the other a screenshot from the Club's outing to Sydney last week. No prizes for guessing which is which.
Unreal Aviation

One of our members, Kevin Brian, is heavily into the design of extreme aircraft, mostly without wings. Here is the Simple 3, a jet powered tailless motor glider.

The Simple 3 is real fun to fly, if you can keep it on the runway during take-off!

Climb with power to 11,000 feet, and glide from Hawarden to Gloucester without thermals! Click on the image to enlarge it.
Several of Kevin's aircraft have been uploaded to the Cix Flight.sim conference file list this week. These include a couple of helicopters, a personal jet backpack - play at being James Bond - and upgrades to his Dirigible the "Enterprise" and the Simple 3.
