| New FSInn Beta |
| The developers of FSInn, one of the two available ATC communication packages for use with VATSIM, have just announced version 1.1 is released as a public Beta version. The download, and updated documentation, is available on the Club's links page. 29/12/05 |
| Bristol Flight Sim Show 15th October 2005 |
Three members attended this show; Ruth McTighe wearing her VATSIM management and controller's hat, met Pete Allnutt and Tim Arnot, although unfortunately, Pete & Tim missed each other.
Pete said, "Hats off to the VATSIM crew who remained very
calm with the hotel network problems which prevented pilots getting on line (Tony Driver tried and failed). Lots of good stuff to see. Had a long chat with Mike Pike, who I
thanked on behalf of the club for his controlling efforts on Tuesdays at Gloucestershire".
Tim added, "It was the first one I'd been to. The motion chair was interesting. One person really mucked up their landing, flipping the plane in the process. Double ouch! The initial thump of impact had everyone wincing, but the tumble that followed.... Rob Young's talk on the Real Air Marchetti was worth the trip alone :-) Aeros training here I come!!! Blew the month's flying budget on a GoFlight stack."

| Big Biggin Bash |
| Eight members turned out for our first Biggin Hill Club night on Thursday 6th October. Unfortunately, it seemed that
the Vatsim servers were wobbly and several people were frequently
disconnected. ATC reception also seemed to be affected - certainly at Biggin Hill. Some of us reported not being able to see other
aircraft. The weather was bad too - very poor visibility. All in all, this made for a difficult evening. Lets hope we have better luck next time. |
| Thursday Club Nights |
| Thursday club nights are now operating from our Biggin Hill base. Good ATC cover is usually available in the region, giving us the opportunity to mix it with the heavies. We meet on the grass GA parking area south of the tower around 20:00. |
| More Than Half Way to Ireland |
| On Wednesday 17th August the club flew from Gloucestershire to RAF Valley on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. The event was ably organised by David Humble and we flew a mixture of aircraft from Spitfire to Cessna 172. The redoubtable ATCO at Valley, Gordon Pownall, did a sterling job over quite a long shift. It was interesting to observe that at Valley we were as close to Dublin as we were to "nearby" Welshpool. |
| Its a Record! |
| On Sunday 3rd July, the Club had a record turnout for its Kemble Fly-in. Seven members took part, several for the first time, and other aircraft joined in the fun. Thanks to a bit of behind the scenes activity bt VATSIM staff and controllers, , we were offered full ATC cover all the way which made the event even more special. Full Report in Operations. |

| The Enstone Three |
On Thursday 23rd June 2005, a brilliant CAVOK flying day, the real world G-GYAV visited Enstone Aero Club in Oxfordshire. On board were members Peter Dodds and Kevin Bryan. There they met up with member Tim Arnott, who flies Diamond Aircraft's exotic glass and carbon fibre in the real world. The three had not met before, as is often the way with on-line communities, and spent a very pleasant relaxing afternoon mooching around interesting aircraft, including the DA20 and DA40 which Tim flies, and talking aviation in all its guises.
Peter said "After the tight procedural world of Liverpool Airport, I found Enstone's relaxed atmosphere a delight once I had tuned into it. Tim took us to a delightful little Cotswold stone pub in Enstone village which reminded me that English summers are the best in the world". |

| The Club visits Halfpenny Green |
| This delightful busy little airfield now boasts the name of Wolverhampton Airport, though Halfpenny Green was much more attractive. Several members had a pleasant evening practicing circuits and RT skills there recently. We welcomed a new member, Dave Lidgely who opened his account with the club that evening. |
| Sydney-Gloucester? |
| On 19th April , Peter Dodds was doing a check flight on the Club's newly acquired Tiger Moth (designed by John Woodside) when to his surprise, he heard David Humble's dulcet tones. Dave came in in a WW2 Hawker Hurricane, much to the consternation of VATSIM's Dan Adams, who could only see two grey paper planes, one very fast, one very slow! |

| Thunder Down Under |
|
The Australian arm of Vatsim, VATPAC, are planning
to have ATC coverage for 29 hrs straight through from the 6th to the
7th May. This gives the UK members of the Club an ideal opportunity
to fly at social hours and still get ATC
down here. Our Member David Humble, is likely be at the SY centre for
most of the time. See: -

| Mystery Aircraft at Gloucester! |
 |
|
The Club held a small outing on Tuesday 5th April from Gloucestershire
to Hawarden. Three of use were able to take part, with regular club
flyer Tony Driver grounded with technical problems. Whilest waiting
to leave Gloucestershire, we noticed a very strange aircraft parked
on the apron. David Humble remarked on our Teamspeak channel "It's
a paper aeroplane" - and so indeed it was. It seems that Squawkbox
3 generates this bizarre creature, (complete with red tail art) if it
doesn't recognise an aircraft type. The "guilty party" (though
it was hardly his fault), was a Jet Provost G-TWLJ.
We stopped for refreshments at Wellesbourne Mountford, and by chance,
the outragious origami object joined us there. Cessna 172 G-BILL also
arrived, having flown in from Biggin Hill. AFISO at Wellesbourne Mountford,
and Club member Eliot Wassell commented "It's the most traffic
I have ever had!"
We then flew on to Hawarden (without the paper Jet Provost), where
Andy King gave us a warm welcome. Apart from Tim Arnot having a FS lockup
en route, G-GYAV taxying up a blind alley at Hawarden, and David Humble
having to leave swiftly to go to his antipodean work, it was a pleasant
and uneventful outing.

| New Club Appointments |
With real world pressures building up towards the end of the tax year, (in a recent post he signed himself: the mysterious workoholic, Berridan Snodunda), Peter Dodds finally agreed to delegate some of his Club activities. Two new appointments were agreed after some discussions in the Cix forum. From the end of February 2005:
* David Humble has taken on the role of Operations Manager, after he volunteered to do route planning and documentation. His main responsibilities are organising and planning events, training and competitions.
* Tony Driver was appointed Membership Secretary - maintaining membership details, keeping tabs on members who are not active, so we don't lose them, (it seems they may be cousins of Mr Snodunda), and keeping in touch with our Associate Members. Peter admitted that these activites have fallen a bit behind. Tony also agreed to maintain the membership, aircraft and news pages on the club web site.
* Peter Dodds remains overall Club Manager, and webmaster.
* Peter Allnutt registered and maintains the club web domain and Teamspeak server. |
| First Anniversary of the Club ! |
| Depending on which event you choose as the start of the Club, the end of January or early February is the first Anniversary of the Club. We have achieved a lot in a short time, and are now well known within VATSIM-UK as champions of Light Aircraft VFR flying. To celebrate the event, a Club outing to Rotterdam is being planned for Wednesday 2nd February. The Dutch VACC have been warned! |
|
| Thames Trembled! |
| When Ruth McTighe led her squadron of Club C172s into the Heathrow Control Zone on a Special VFR flight around London on 17th November 2005, the Thames controller was given considerably more work than he was used to. Flying in airspace from which single engined aircraft are totally prohibited in the real world, Club members had a really good sightseeing event, especially those with the recently released Visual Flight London Scenery. This months cover picture shows G-XAJD passing the Houses of Parliament. |
| What's an Avatar? |
The world of computers endlessly taxes the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary. Here is a word which can mean a Hindu Deity, a ghost (temporary manifestation of a continuing entity) or an image representing a user in a virtual reality multi-user environment. I think we will go with the latter!
The Club now has its own avatar for use principally on the VATSIM Forum. You can edit your forum membership profile to add the avatar by pointing to the URL of its source, which is
http://www.cixvfrclub.org.uk/CVFRC_Avatar.gif. If you strongly identify with the Club as your main source of Flight Sim fun, this is how you can show the Vatsim world!

| New Downloads |
ukvrpv1.zip - all the official UK Visual Reference Points (VRPs). VRPs are used by ATC as reporting points for inbound and outbound traffic. In FS, these appear as barber's poles. they have lights on top for night flying. and will then display in FSNAV as named VRPs if you re-run the
FSNAV database create program.Originally sourced from AVSIM, you will find it on the Scenery download page.
Servinfo UK Airfields. This is a text file to modify the contents of the Servinfo airfield data file 'Servinfo.dat' so that Servinfo displays all licensed UK airfields. A valuable addition to Servinfo for VFR pilots. You will find it on the Downloads External Links page. |
| Downloads Pages Reorganised |
| The downloads pages have been organised a little better recently to separate documentation, software, FS files and external sources. Further changes will be taking place over the next month, mainly additional links to external sources and training material. |
| Biggin Hill Club Night 27/10/05 |
| This was billed as a Practice Forced Landings event, but on gathering at Biggin, we decided to
defer it due to quite strong variable cross
winds (17knots varying 140-200 degrees). Six members took part in the evening. Peter D did try a glide approach on finals
at Biggin runway 21, but had to use the engine to reach the airfield.
Frank flew down from Cambridge via Southend to Biggin.
Allan did some circuits at Biggin, but was unable to meet us on TeamSpeak.
Peter D and Tony D both took advantage of Redhill Tower being manned, and
started from there with a short stop at Biggin before continuing to London
City, where a pre-eam session was running for student controller Ashley Rawson. He certainly had a busy time with a number of movements including a couple of transports, 3 club members flying circuits, David H inbound from Biggin, and a police helicopter.
After completing her circuit detail in G-RMCT at City, Ruth took off in G-FLYI for Stansted. |
| Gloucester Club Night 18/10/05 |
| A good turn out this evening at Gloucestershire. 6 members flew, including new member John Davidson who flew the Cessna 182 around Gloucestershire using text comms with ATC. New member Doug Wilkinson popped into check his Teamspeak connection and stayed to chat for a few minutes, but didn't fly this time. It was also good to welcome back one of our founder members Tim Arnot who has been missed for a while.
We generally did our own thing, flying to and from Welshpool, Wolverhampton, & Hawarden, but all gathering back at Gloucestershire. Peter D was en route from Welshpool to Blackpool but they shut up shop before he got there. So he diverted into Hawarden, changed aircraft to a more speedy mount - the 160 knot Twin Otter, and made it back to Gloucesteshire before lights out. |

| New & Updated Flight Training Tutorials |
| Exercises 1, 2, 3 had minor updates on 14/10/05 and Exercises 12 and 13a, which cover basic circuit flying, were added on 16/10/05. Find them here. |
| New Tutorial Download |
| In the Downloads section there is a now a new version of the VATSIM set up manual for Club members. Long-standing members may also find it useful as it includes information of how to fly with VATSIM and the Club using a Local Area Network, and setting up a PTT button the yoke, rather than the keyboard. |
| Tuesday Formation |
| Members joined together to fly in a group outing from Wolverhampton to Gloucestershire on Tuesday 4th October. See the Events page for more details. |
| JHB Airlines to join VATSIM |
| This small but thriving virtual operator, flying everything from Cessna 172s to Boeing 747s is to join Vatsim for some of its events. Frequently, but not always based on Ronaldsway, Isle of Man, it will give us a new and regular place to fly to - particularly when the TT is on! We have quite close links with JHB Airlines, and some of its members are also members of this club. |
| Inaugural Tuesday Club Night |
| Three of us managed to make it to our first Gloucestershire (Gloster) Club Night on 6th September, but the airspace was very busy with
several non-club aircraft, including three from Bristol doing NDB approaches. David Humble got up early to introduce the club to his Beech 18, whilst Tony Driver and Peter Dodds tried to improve on the Sywell experience with formation flying around the Malvern hills with separations down to 0.1nm. "We
will get closer with a bit more practice", said Tony. The separation appears different to each pilot - looking back from the
lead aircraft it is seen as 0.5nm, while the one behind sees it as 0.1nm. |
| A Little Reorganisation |
| With effect from August 28th, Tony Driver has taken on the role of Operations Manager, and Pete Allnutt, Membership. David Humble, a real world PPL, will now be our flying advisor and briefings officer. Members have been advised of the full details by email. |
| Fly Well at Sywell |
| This VATSIM event, on Thursday August 14th, splendidly organised by Bill Casey, featured a low level formation flypast by Club aircraft. Our flying skills were put to the test, and were not found lacking, fortunately. Six aircraft started out from Leicester, flying in losse formation, whilst one meber acted as ground coordinator for the Club at Sywell. See the Events page for pictures. |
| New Events Planned |
| After a quiet couple of months with only a few isolated outings the Events calendar is on the move again. Check out several fun outings planned for July. |
| Classic Paper Planes Now! |
| "They are going to have to do something
about this" said one of the club pilots who flew into Gloucestershire
yesterday (19th). "We turn up in two beautiful classic aircraft -
A Hawker Hurricane and a Tiger Moth, and Squawkbox 3 renders them as paper
planes - it's an insult!". "One of them was only a paper tiger",
joked another member. It seems that these aircraft are unknown to SB3
even though the Tiger at least is in the aircraft display library. See
Picture. |
| Red Nose Event Report |
| Five club members, including Spitfire
pilot Colin Billing, supported the Comic Relief event at Hawarden on Friday
11th March. All went via or from Birmingham hoping to take advantage of
Mike Pike's promised extra donations. Tony Driver left Birmingham just
as the display team were arriving for their refuelling stop, and managed
one circuit before landing at EGNR to watch the display. David Humble
arrived just as the display team were about to run in, causing a short
delay. Peter Dodds appeared on the apron to watch the display, and then
switched to Birmingham for his planned flight. Both Tony and David did
a few circuits after the display. Peter Dodds had PC problems, and failed
to make the ICAO.dat file change recommended by Andy. The resulting 45
knot gusting EGNR crosswind was too much for his C172N, but he made a
donation anyway. Ruth McTighe made a late but still very welcome appearance.
It was a very enjoyable event. |
| Red Nose Event |
| Club members supported the Comic
Relief GA event at Hawarden on Friday 11th March. The landing fees were
donated to Comic Relief at £1 per landing, and per take off - £1 for touch and go.
For details see the announcement on the VATSIM
UK forum, or visit Andy's
Hawarden website. Some of us took advantage of Mike Pike's offer of donating £1
for each aircraft departing EGBB so several members flew from Birmingham.. |
| Our Crowded Skies! |
| On the evening of Tuesday 25th January, as the club was running it's Marham event, there were a total of 65 UK pilots and 21 controllers counted on a Servinfo snapshot at 21:00 zulu, within the UK alone. |
| RAF Marham trip becomes a Big Event! |
Following a suggestion from David Humble, ex-RAF and current VATSIM Controller Gordon Pownall opened RAF Marham (and it's civilian Aero Club) to our members on Tuesday 25th January. A record turnout saw 6 club members contribute to a total of 17 movements at Marham.
A feature of the evening was a Hurricane piloted by Colin Billing and Tony Driver in the Spitfire flying in formation from Biggin Hill to Gloucestershire, and then from Gloucestershire to Marham.
A feature write up and pictures are coming very soon. |
| New Members - sans frontières |
|
Old hands gave a very warm welcome to several new members during the recent weeks. These include Full Members Georg Liigand and Simon Bird, and Associate members Colin Billing, Nick Axeworthy, Martin Leats, Paul Woods .
Colin, Martin and Nick have already joined in our events, and Georg, a very experienced virtual pilot flies in the UK quite often although he lives in Estonia. We hope they will all have a long and enjoyable time with the club. |
