Two Hundred and Climbing
Membership of the Club reached the 200 mark in November.  Consequently, the committee has been very active in planning the Club's structure and activities for 2008 in to provide a good service for the membership and there are some exciting new activities to look forward to in 2008. 26/12/07
Stripping For Summer
Gerry Winskill of JHB Airlines, has built scenery for almost 100 private airstrips (fram strips) in the UK, for both FS8 and FSX.  Our own Pete Chapman has built scenery for a further dozen in Essex for FS9.  Gerry had the idea of JHB members visiting them all in turn, and the Club was invited to take part also. This event has proved very popular and great fun. Full details can be found in the Farm Strips section of the Operations pages. 04/08/07
Flying Chairs? No!

Following a bright idea from Tony Driver, member Kevin Bryan of Unreal Aviation kindly modelled a chair and spectator for the Club so that members could sit and watch the Sywell Airshow on 11th July, and also see other members sitting in their chairs watching.  In order for the spectator to be easily moved, he was modelled as an aircraft, and indeed could actually fly, although it was not intended that he should.
Unfortunately, after making enquiries, it turns out that such creations are not permitted under VATSIM rules, so cannot be used.  If you have downloaded the file (now withdrawn) , you can still fly a chair, if that's what makes your day, but in the privacy of your off-line flying, please! 06/07/07

Good View, But Not Allowed on VATSIM

Biggin Base Opens
There was a good turnout for the Grand Opening of the new Club operations centre, clubhouse and hangar at Biggin Hill on 1st June. The event was marked by a flypast of the 2-4-Cix Display Team whilst other members watched from a crowded apron outside the new hangar.  The CFI chose the occasion to arrive in his newly acquired 1943 Westland Lysander. See the Pictures page for "photos" of the event. 02/06/07
Thanks Ted & Pete
A non member of the club, Ted Andrews, constructed the buildings (WWII hut, Portacabins & long awaited furniture) specially for us using GMAX.  Pete Chapman managed the project and placed Ted's buildings into the scenery files.  The Club owes both of them a big thank you for their superb effort on our behalf. 02/06/07
Happy Birthday to Us!

On 4th February this year, among the busy life of the club - with new events, new members, formation flying, the endless struggle to get FS to run on members PCs, and a few more members grappling with FSX, we forgot to give ourself a 3rd birthday party. We had the virtual cake made too! 31/03/07

Aussie Tiger
The 2-4-Cix display team Tiger group have chosen the Tiger Moth from Warwick Carter as their preferred version of this historic aircraft, from the four candidates on their short list.  It has the edge over the otherwise truly excellent Just Flight version, because it has the advantage of being freeware.  Warwick has created a model especially for the club to allow us to customise it to our needs.  We hope you agree it's a fine aircraft to show off at Sywell 2007, and, who knows, perhaps other events..Click on the pictures below for a bigger version. 30/03/07

2-4-Cix Practice
The 2-4-Cix vintage formation team have commenced practice in earnest for the 2007 season and now have their own web page, accessed from the operations menu. New team leader Gray Brett said, "There has been a terrific response from members keen to have a go at this, and the deHavilland Chipmunk and Tiger Moth have proved popular aircraft for the team" 26/02/07

Thomas does the Biz!

At his interview with Astac International (see below) Thomas wowed them with his skills so much that not only did they confirm his work experience place, but they offered him a job for the summer holidays. Well done Thomas! 26/02/07

Thomas - Cleared for Take Off
One of our younger members, Thomas Crisps has been trying for some time to get his school Work Experience at an aviation establishmment at Gloucestershire Airport. Busy Gloucestershire has quite a number of companies operating from within its perimeter, but most were unable to help. However, enthusiastic and determined and almost at the end of his list of possibles, Thomas got a "Yes" from Astac International, the Air Traffic Control Training Organisation. Congratulations to Thomas and to Astac who can have the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping the seedlings of our future aviation industry grow a little. 19/01/07
2-4-Cix Debut! Sywell 2007

The event was a huige sucess for everyone involved; from oreganiser Bill Casey to the 50 or so "spectator" aircraft which flew in to watch the displays. The Club's 2-4-Cix display was slightly dented by connection issues, probably diue to the large number of aircraft in one place - certainly a UK VATSIM record, if not a world record. Other superb displays included a pair of DC3s in formation, the virtual Red Arrows and Concorde and our own Tony Driver doing the link aerobatics between each display in the RealAir spitfire.  12/07/07

Down-Under Member Comes Up-Over
David Humble from Sydney has been spending a few weeks in Europe recently and as his parents live in Cheshire, decided to call on Peter Dodds.  After a chat about flying and flight-simming over a pint of Real Ale and a good lunch, they decided to take a "team photograph" using the camera's self-timer.  Peter needed to test this function on his new camera first...  David also had a flight in Peter's "office".

The Story of Our Biggin Base

The new club complex consists of an old WWII RAF dispersal hut which has lain empty for many years, but which was taken over some time ago by the CIX VFR Club, with the intention of turning it into club offices.

However, thanks to a large prepayment by the organisers of the Sywell Airshow for the appearance of the 2-4-CIX Display team at that display in July, and a healthy bank balance ( Mr Brown's tax collectors were beginning to take an uninvited interest) the management team decided the time was right to develop the site.

We purchased some old portacabins and secured the services of that well known construction company, "Bodgit & Scarper", who have constructed a clubhouse with members bar (The Forum Club) and  erected a new hangar. 02/06/07

Seen at Sywell
An impromptu 2-4-Cix team practice took place after several members of the team "just happened " to have a look in Teamspeak to see who was there on the morning of Friday 13th April.  The group - 2 Tiger Moths and 2 Chipmunks looked splendid (below) in their new livery lined up at Sywell after the session. 13/04/07
A Bit of a Lean?
Would anyone care to guess which is the "Winged Messenger's" favourite aircraft for flight simming? We promise to redress the imbalance with some different aeroplane stories in the coming weeks. 30/03/07
More Members
Only a couple of month's ago it seems we were contemplating welcoming our 100th member.  Now as we move into the summer flying season (and perhaps a little less flight-simming) we are approaching our 150th member.  We only set out to have a bit of fun, not become the biggest virtual flying club on the planet.  (Come on someone - challenge that statement if you will!) 30/03/07
More Management Changes
A relatively new member with bags of enthusiasm, ideas and, crucially, time, is Richard Sinclair who has volunteered to take over Events Manager role from Pete Chapman who is struggling with lack of the third requisite .  Pete will continue on the management team with 'Special Projects' as his portfolio.  Richard and Pete collaborated on the very successful South Wales event, and we expect to see more balloons and strange objects from Pete being used in Events organised by Richard. 29/03/07
Wot Generation Gap?
The Club's youngest member is 15 years old. The Club's oldest member is 86. We just thought that was worth mentioning.
All Change
A few changes have been made to the Management team recently to embrace the Club's growing success and ambitions. The new management team members and their roles are now listed on a web page accessed from the membership page, togther with a brief CV of each, so members can get a better picture of "who is running this outfit"! 26/02/07
FSX on Club Nights? - Not Yet Anyway
Although many members have bought it, which will make Microsoft happy, the customers are, it seems, less happy. There has been a negligible use of FSX in the club so far, due probably to a combination of its different structure to FS9, a number of vital (to serious FS Pilots) third party addons suddenly not working, and initial teething troubles with some addons written, in haste perhaps, for FSX launch. Several functions work quite differently, and require a new learning experience, particularly the essential multiplayer function. Many addons are written by largely amateur software writers who face a significant code rewrite in their spare time.

Although it is consistently the biggest selling "game" software package worldwide, one does get the impression that there have been far more complaints in the web forums from the "it's not a game, it's a serious hobby" fraternity about FSX than about previous versions. One club member said of flying into Carcassonne, "Another bare airport in a barren desert. At times like this I can't help thinking FSX takes away more than it adds." Maybe pilots would be more accepting if the aircraft aerodynamics had been remodelled accurately alongside the pretty effects such as wet runways and reflections off smooth surfaces.. 04/01/07

A Busy Autumn

The Club has had a very busy autumn, in spite of the bad flying weather (we can turn it off if we have to, which you real pilots can't!). The Biggin night move to Friday proved very successful and Biggin Hill experienced a sharp increase in movements. Club members were often joined by a number of other aircraft making a very busy environment at times.

We made a lot of new members welcome - some 20 individuals from literally all over the world - Australia, South Africa, and recently Finland. The total membership is now over 110.

Christmas saw one valliant member join in with the Finnish VATCC's annual "Visit Santa" event, and some members have started practicing for the 2-4-Cix aerobatics performance we have agreed to put on for Sywell 2007, next July.

The forum continues to be very lively, with often 20 posts in a day. We launched a quiz in October, and finally, Yes folks - finally - the extension to the members bar was formally opened on December 5th, accompanied by much ribald comment about chairs and sculptures. If you want to know more, you'll have to join the club! 04/01/07
