Final update of the season 11th July 2007
Well the show finally came and went. On the whole I think it's fair to say it was a tremendous success. There were many reports from outside the club saying Sywell III was the best thus far. There were one or two of us whom found the experience not quite as rewarding as we would have liked due to connection problems but I suppose that was inevitable. Alas we also lost the Tigers along the way, culminating with dear Don having to go through the ordeal of surgery just a week before. Still lets pray for his speedy recovery as I'm sure he is gagging to get back on the football pitch J
One chap who really did take the bull by the horns was Tony, who surely deserves 'man of the match' award. I remember his first tentative steps way back at the beginning of the practice season saying he'll need a lot of practice as he hadn't put many hours in on the Spitfire.
Now he leads the way with an outstanding solo display not only satisfied to display within the 2-4-CIX slot but to fill in throughout the whole air show. He now says he wants to perform mock dog fights and has thrown the guantlet down for any budding young 'Baron Von Richthoven' sparring partner! Here he is throwing the Spit around without a care!
Leading up to the big day saw a number of other display members working through their routines. We were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the DC3 formation team on 2 separate occasions. On one occasion Pete C and I got the 'nod' to fly alongside and managed to wrap off a few photo shots of the DC3 formation. Very sporting of those chaps indeed.  A big thank you for that fellas.
Here is a selection of photos of the DC£s going through their paces. You might spot Pete C trailing in the latter shots. We needed full throttle to keep up!
In addition we were even graced by a flight of Red Arrows. 3 all together, although only 2 captured in frame (above). These 'birds' shot through quite quickly as you can imagine and there is no way our Chipmunks could have kept up with them, so no in flight pictures I'm afraid, but these weren't too bad considering.
I'm not going to go through all the thank you's here as they have already been said in the various forums but after a short break I shall be getting back to work, planning next year repertoire. Needless to say it will be quite different and will include more pilots in specific roles. This year the main formation was kept to a simple circuit so as not to challenge pilots whom were happy to remain in their comfort zone. Next year I will hope those pilots would be happier in becoming more proactive on the aerobatic side. This then will leave vacancies for those who would like to join the '2-4-CIX' team. Recruitment will take place in due course.

Cheers for now.

Dress Rehearsal 2nd July 2007
Firstly apologies for the delay in this update. It's been a very busy few weeks recently. Well the penultimate 'big day' our dress rehearsal, came upon us and as normal when you set dates for events in the real world it seems a long way off, then before you know where you are it springs on top of you. Well despite last minute team member changes everything seemed to come together well. Here we see the syncro pair coming in at right angles to the display line just before the split, followed by an inverted pass then a mid point pass just before the horizontal loop.

For the first time, I was pleased to note we also had a number of spectators. I was particularly interested in what they had to say from their perspective so I invited comments from them. Apart from the compliments, which were humbly received, we did hear about problems they were having from a viewing standpoint. In addition to this it was mentioned that they did not know what to expect.

To address this issue it was agreed that Ruth McTighe would take on the role of commentator through TS. Details of any arrangements for the show day itself have not yet been received from Bill Casey (show organiser) but Ruth has volunteered to offer her services for then as well. Thank you Ruth for your kind offer. Well thinking about it you were more press ganged after your suggestion about having a commentator.

With regard to spectator viewing issues there are a number of solutions available. These solutions have been contributed by a number of CIX club members so it is down to the individual as to what suits them and their system best. Ruth has agreed to put a spectators brief together so we shall look out for that in due course.

Please do remember you may find performance issues affect you, so you would need to adjust your FS settings. Don't forget that it will be unlikely you would have been online with so many other 'players' in the vicinity.

A special thanks once again goes out to Mark Dring who kindly came to the rescue and sorted out our new Teamspeak connection. We attempted a practice session without TS, which unfortunately didn't go to well. The subsequent practice session was cancelled because of this. But thanks to Marks intervention we managed to get another account set up before the rehearsal and all was well again. This provided an opportunity to re-arrange the chat rooms and make use of the Channel commander facility. We now have a separate 2-4-CIX channel and sub channels set up. This has allowed us to still pass important information but reduce the amount of transmission conflicts when the formation splits into the three routines.

Two Tigers at play
One Chip playing catch up and a pair holding station
Rehearsal Update 6th May 2007
Well what a session the last meet was. (Sunday 6th May) The morning began with five Chipmunks and a Spitfire. Don wasn't sure if he could make it but turned up a bit later and managed to catch up. Disappointingly no other Tigers showed a face today so it was left to the Chipmunks to hold the fort.  The server Gods were on our side today as there was very little display lag affecting the event. This made the job a lot easier and the formation really held together well.
Here you can see various screenshots supplied by Steve, Myself & Tony at Leicester. Note the different colour schemes where some have taken on the services of Peter Dodds's paint shop. This option is currently unavailable to SB3 users.
For the 2nd time we were able to integrate the three main sections of the display into one.
  • Formation fly past,
  • Spitfire solo,
  • Syncro pair.

This was followed by the 2nd Formation flypast.

Since the last update discussion took place on whether we should consider changing the whole team to Chipmunks, many of the issues have resolved themselves. Roger volunteered to work on an improved version of the Tiger and brought it along on Wednesday last to demonstrate it. Alas his PC decided not to play and it had to be scrapped. On behalf of the team I'd like to thank Roger for his efforts and whilst we may not make use of his work on this occasion I'm sure there will be an opportunity at subsequent events.
Pete C has decided to move over to the Chipmunk camp and has been a staunch pursuant of the Syncro pair therefore I have decided to accept his application to participate. No other participant has stepped forward with the same amount of enthusiasm as Pete so I have decided to pair with him, therefore the syncro pair is now selected. Work has now started in earnest on the pair routine. Reluctantly it was decided to only include horizontal manoeuvres and disregarding the vertical i.e. Cubans, Loops & Stall turns etc, as this did not display well from a spectators view point. It was agreed however to keep vertical manoeuvres for the Spitfire with maybe a slight amendment at Tony's discretion.
It was with great pleasure we were graced with Bill Casey's (Sywell's airshow organiser) presence, who took time out to watch part of our routine. I managed to take a moment from the pilots debrief to communicate to him on the Vatsim private chat. He was very complimentary on the parts he saw and has said he will try to be available for our dress rehearsal on the 23/05 So more incentive to lick this baby into shape eh?
Here we have shots from Harry's ship looking out to Chip 1 & 2 (Richard and Steve), with me bringing up the rear passing Telford Industrial estate followed by the next 2, short finals at Sywell
A valid point was raised about radio discipline. Now that all parties are integrating as a whole it has been found that we need to keep our TS chatter more streamlined. From now on
  • Room 1 to be the default room for the formation leaving the club room free for club spectators
  • Flight Leader Take Off countdown call required.
  • Flight Leader turn calls only required for the formation.
  • Flight Leader to call passing the 1 mile marker balloon on 1st & 2nd fly pasts, GLO please monitor this and pass info to Spit1 if missed.
  • The Syncro pair should change to room 2 immediately after the 1st formation fly past
  • Spit1 to change to room 3 before commencing solo display routine. GLO to update time progress as Spit1 requires
  • GLO is to acquaint himself with the commander function on TS, (Harry has volunteered to advise Nick on this. Please will you report back to me outcome of this).
  • GLO to advise syncro pair the half time point of Spit1's routine and when clear of the display line.
  • Once Spit1 and the syncro pair have finished their respective routine they are free to return to room 1 for pilots debrief.

Naturally any calls required by any pilot as deemed necessary should be allowed. Free chat should be kept to a minimum in particular when approaching turning points. Descent calls are no longer required.

The duties of the GLO are now beginning to mount.
  • Before the start of a practice session he will get Vatsim's latest weather
  • acertain the available runways for both Leicester and Sywell and
  • ensure all pilots are advised accordingly.
  • He must monitor the frequency of the airfields in use and ensure the formation is practised on all available licensed runways. (Otherwise they may be selected on the current wx conditions).
  • If an ATC/AFISunit logs online during any session he will liase with them giving our intentions
  • He will inform flight leaders if contact is required.
  • In the absence of any ATC/AFIS unit, he will advise any local traffic conflicts of our intensions via the private chat facility.
Here we are parked at the end of a good workout. A jolly well done today chaps...it's taking shape.
Lastly both Richard and I would like to make our excuses for missing the final approach path to rwy 15 today. Mine resulting in a go around as I tried to land on the taxiway and Richard's need for a vector. As the saying goes we will try harder! J Plus I must remember to switch TS room at the right time!
Rehearsal Update April 2007
It has been 3 months since the 2-4-CIX has been developing its display in earnest. I now thought it time to review the progress of the team. Although good progress has been achieved and there have been many successes I can foresee problems that could befall us if we don't take steps to insure we are less exposed to these weaknesses.

Trying to arrange group meets for the whole team is proving impossible. One of the problems that has arisen is, depending on what day is suggested we are either down on sufficient Tigers or Chipmunks. The majority of team members have expressed a preference to fixed day group sessions. I have therefore decided to make Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings 2-4-CIX group meet days. This allows the maximum opportunity for the majority of pilots to attend a group session.

Applications were invited for pilots to fill the positions of the synchronised pair. It was decided the Chipmunk was the most suitable aircraft for this purpose. This led to restricting the invitation to members of the Chipmunk team. Although I received offers from a few pilots they did however express reservations about whether they would be suited to the role. This of course would place undue stress for them to perform so we needed to look for a solution.

Don and Pete C kindly volunteered their services from the Tiger stable and whilst it was decided the Tiger wouldn't be suitable it was still another avenue to explore even if it meant a reduced level of display. After a few practise sessions, as previously predicted, the Tiger couldn't perform to an acceptable standard. Another suggestion put forward by Don and Pete C was to 'decamp' to the Chipmunk team or change aircraft after the first flypast. I had reservations about this due to the unpredictability of FS/Vatsim connection. It would lead to an increased risk of a lock up. The effect would be severe on the display should this occur. To 'decamp' to the Chipmunks team would leave the Tiger team seriously undermanned. Another suggestion that was thrown into the pot was to have the whole 2-4-CIX team (Spitfire solo excepted) be equipped with Chipmunks.

Whilst the Tiger team would like to remain intact (a view I myself share), there are obvious advantages for the display team as a whole. This action would strengthen the team by:

  • Open the pilot base for all to be considered for the 'Synchronised pair'
  • Should a pilot suffer PC/connection problems this will have less impact on the display as a whole.
  • A less fragmented group practise with a lower pilot turnout
  • Allow more flexibility for reserve pilot use
  • Increased standardized aircraft performance
  • Improved visibility for pilots reducing disorientation
  • Still able to retain Peter D's paint work
  • Spectators only require one aircraft colour scheme to install
  • Improved spectator visual impact seeing a larger flight of same aircraft
  • Sufficient time to convert to type
Rehearsal Update 20th March 2007
Tuesday 20th saw our first evening group session. It was a record, breaking evening by all accounts. According to Peter D, we had 16 members on TS and 20 plus members online. Welcome new team members Harry, James and Norman.

This was the first time both Tiger and Chip teams flew together on the formation route. Despite a few teething problems the formation performed well and with some guidance managed to complete the course in the allotted time frame, which was the main purpose of the practice session. Due to a certain lapse in memory (normally a luxury afforded to members of the over 50's club) the Tigers were thrown in at the deep end as their Flight Leader went AWOL J. Don kindly stepped in (Press ganged) to lead.

Various passes from the formation team
Once the formation completed the 1st pass Tony then had centre stage for his repertoire. There was then a period of inactivity  (slot reserved for the synchronized pair). A note here Tony, when your display is completed please can you position to land ASAP, taking into account the synchro pair arriving from the west on a 120 deg heading, ATC permitting of course. This leaves the 2nd formation pass to break and position for low-level circuit to land. The synchro pair shall be re-formating on the inbound aircraft.

During the debrief a few suggestions were put forward:

Pete C thought it less fatiguing to fly a loose formation whilst en-route and tighten up from the FAP to 21. This sounds like a good idea as long as we don't forget that's it's still a formation. The Flight leaders will still need to fly accurately in order to keep within the time slot.

Don made the suggestion to have markers identifying the turning points for the formation route. I agreed that the balloons used for the Welsh trip would be ideal and that I'd request Pete C to see if he could make a small scenery file. No sooner had I done this Pete came up with the goods. Many thanks indeed for your prompt action to this request. The link for the download can be found in the 2-4-CIX thread.

Richard put forward a trial to find the most effective server whilst connected to Vatsim It has been decided to log on to UK1 for the next session to see if the performance improves. Over the next few sessions we may experiment a little until we can agree on the best server.

Coming into effect on the next group practice session, once the formation is airborne pilots are requested to join together in one TS room allocated by the GLO. It is hoped this will improve situational awareness.

It was agreed that the Chipmunk will be better placed to perform the aerobatic part of the display along with the Spitfire. So far we have had 2 volunteers step forward for the synchronized pair, Harry Elkins & Richard Sinclair. Many thanks for that guys. They have  begun practice on the routines required for the aerobatic sequence. I am looking for at least another two if possible. It is not too late for others to step forward. Final selection of the synchronized pair will not take place till late in the day so there is still time to perfect the skills required. Please contact me for further details.

Nick Taylor has agreed to take on the role of  'Ground Liaison Officer' (GLO).  Nick I believe is an ideal candidate for this as it does require flight monitoring and communication skills which he has demonstrated so often as a Vatsim  UK controller. Welcome to the team Nick. This leaves one more vacancy for a photographer/s. If there are any CIX members who would be interested in this role then again please contact me for details.

Below and right: Tony strutting his stuff.

Rehearsal Update 11th March 2007

After a successful Chipmunk practice session today I'm pleased to report the Chipmunks have done a fine job at progressing and are now on par with the Tigers.  Today we took off from Leicester and completed the timed route culminating in completion of the two formation Fly-pasts.

The first picture sees the team several miles out on their 2nd pass followed by them preparing to break away for a low level circuit to land. Richard passes Pete C in the long grass, who turned up to visit and take a few snaps.
Lined up at leicester for take off, two low passes in nice tight formation, and finally, parked up and ready for a cuppa! Pictures courtesy of Stephen Banks & Gray Brett.
Our next group meeting is Tuesday 20th March. I shall be on TS from 20:00 and preparing for aerobatic practice. Near to 20:45 the Tiger and Chipmunk teams need to be on the ramp at Leicester. Adam Walker has been elected as Flight leader for the Tigers. The Chipmunk team has still yet to finalize their selection due to team member changes. For the time being Richard Sinclair has volunteered to step in and hold the fort.

The itinerary for Tuesday is the complete formation flight of both Tiger and Chipmunk teams followed closely by Tony's Spitfire solo I shall be coordinating timings from Sywell via TS.

Rehearsal Update 25th February 2007
Over the last week we have seen both the Tiger and Chipmunk teams practice both on separate weekdays and combined on the Sunday 2-4-CIX meet. I'm pleased to say that progress has been made, particularly in the Tiger camp. In fairness the Tigers have an advantage insofar as all members are making use of TrackIR, which greatly assists pilots keeping station in the formation. Sunday saw the Tigers led by Adam Walker and the Chipmunks by Stephen Banks. I have to say both Flight leaders did a sterling job at maintaining altitude and speed. Well done, chaps.

Shortly I'll be requiring nominations for Flight leaders. You will need to demonstrate an ability to accurately hold a given heading, altitude, and speed. Navigate a visual cross country, this will require VFR photographic scenery. I have now received confirmation from Bill of the 'Display line' so the route for the 2nd fly-past has now been chosen and is described after the initial arrival for the 1st fly-past. Departing Leicester 1000ft AGL (although Deenethorpe - UK01 is closer and is under consideration) Please note Chipmunk team, the formation cruise is now set at 80kts to coincide with the Tigers. This way only one 2nd Fly-past route is required. N.B. Timings are decimal 0.1 = 6 sec.

1st Fly-past.
  • After take off heading 141 deg 16.1 miles 12.1 min DCT Telford Way Industrial Estate (Northern tip), on the western boundary of Kettering.
  • FAP (Final Approach Path) Turn right heading 206 deg 7 miles 5.25 min DCT Sywell. Arrive Sywell Rwy 21 threshold 100 ft QFE 998.5
  • Total 25.1 miles, duration 17.35 minutes.
2nd Fly-past.
  • After airfield boundary turn right heading 320 deg DCT Scaldwell 3.9 miles 2.9 min
  • Turn right heading 030 deg DCT Desborough (Eastern boundary) 5.8 miles 4.35 min
  • Turn right heading 114 deg 3.1 miles 2.3 min DCT Telford Way Industrial Estate (Northern tip)
  • FAP, Turn right heading 206 deg 7 miles 5.25 min DCT Sywell. Arrive Sywell Rwy 21 threshold 100 ft QFE 998.5
  • Position for low level tight circuit to land on the active
  • Total 19.8 miles, duration 14.8 minutes. (Allowance + or - 30 sec's)
Now I'll be away for the next 2 Sundays so the teams will have a little breathing space to start putting the formation routine into practice. It will also give people a chance to have a couple of Sundays free. On our next major get together I'd like to coordinate Tony's arrival in the Spitfire to begin just as the 1st Fly-past departs. So the clock will now play an active role in the display. Once we can harmonize the Formation with the Spitfire I can start taking a look at the synchronized pair. As a reminder to all I have drawn up a check list of settings. Please would you ensure these are correctly set on your systems on each training session. If we find new items or wish to change the list please notify me and I'll amend accordingly.
Check List Settings
  1. Weather nil
  2. Visibility 30 - 50 miles (optional to improve performance)
  3. Sywell QFE 998.5
  4. Both Barnsley & Chatham QNH 1013.2
  5. A/C Realism setting 'Easy'
  6. Crash Detect 'Off'
  7. Gyro drift 'Off'
  8. Fuel 'Full Tanks'
  9. FPS 'unlimited'
  10. Vatsim connection server 'Europe CE'
  11. SB3 Formation box 'Ticked' n/a for FSInn
  12. Formation cruise speed 80 kts both Tiger & Chip
  13. Ensure auto rudder is 'Off' Aerobatic pilots only

Next meeting Tuesday 20th March from 20:00 onwards

Rehearsal Update 18th February 2007
Sunday 18th Feb saw the first organized 2-4-CIX, practice session, and what a turn out it was! In total there were seven participants so a big thank you to Tony, Pete C, John, Adam, Richard, Stephen & Don. In addition both John Cronan and I were flying support helicopters on photographic sorties.

So what have we learnt from the day? Firstly we have organized specific aircraft types for each team member, which are as follows. John, Stephen, Richard & myself will fly the Chipmunk. Pete C, Adam, Don & Peter D will fly the Tiger Moth. Tony has elected to fly the Spitfire. I would request at this point if any member wishes to transfer aircraft type please try to make the decision soon thus enabling us to put in sufficient hours on type.

Now we have pilots organized into Chippy and Tiger teams we need to select formation flight leaders. I think it fair that, if they so desire, each pilot should take a turn at flight leader on subsequent training sessions.

The flight as a whole should then select whom they deem best suited. Hopefully we can ascertain the chosen flight leaders in a week or so. If necessary I'm happy to cast a deciding vote. When in formation flight it was suggested we adhere to specific call signs. This was adopted and found to be very successful. This will now be adopted on all subsequent flights therefore flight leaders will be 'Chip1' & 'Tiger1' respectively followed by 2,3,4 etc as required by other flight members. When logging onto Vatsim these call signs should be used thus making it easier to identify aircraft on FS Commander/FS Nav. Hopefully Tony will have unlocked the Training rooms on TS by the next meet this will make comms a lot easier to organize.
Both Tigers and Chipmunks steadily improved the tightness of their formation flying. Screenshots courtesy of John Cronan, Stephen Banks and Tony Driver.

It was apparent (and no surprise I hasten to add) that the flight leaders should have more flexibility in their flight path for training purposes. With this in mind our next session will take place at Sywell (EGBK). It is customary for the formation to depart from Leicester (EGBG) then route direct to Sywell. Taking into account positioning for the display line, this is a 15 minute flight in nil winds @ 112 kts. I've yet to time it in the Tiger. Perhaps the Tiger team could take the opportunity to do this. To start, both Tiger and Chip teams shall depart Leicester and practice formation. Flight leaders should decide routing appropriate to their flights progress.

Please ensure you leave enough separation and avoid any CAS. Only when the flight is happy at holding formation should you then attempt to route for Sywell. You may wish to land back at Leicester before doing so. Cruise alt should be set at 1000 ft QNH. For the display line run in this should be set for 200 ft on the QFE by the runway threshold. Ensure you allow sufficient run in to allow for the turn and descent without increasing speed or you will break formation. After the fly-past continue to hold at 'Holding point TBA. Be advised these will differ for both teams' The Spitfire solo shall depart from Sywell and continue aerobatic practice to prefect a 7 min routine.

Please keep track on the formation teams progress and listen out for their arrival to the FAP. In due course I will want to get the Spitfire to coordinate its arrival and departure time so it would be a good idea to include several arrivals to the O/H from different landmarks and make note of the times.

In due course it will be necessary for pilots, particularly flight leaders, Synchronized pairs and solo pilots to become familiar with local landmarks paying particular attention to the following: Pitsford, Pitsford reservoir, Holcot, Overstone Park Golf course, Sywell reservoir, Walgrave. There may be more but until the flight line is confirmed I'll not know for sure.

Proposed next meet Sunday 25th Feb 10:30  Photos courtesy of John Cronan, Stephen Banks and Tony Driver.

Rehearsal Update 11th February 2007

Well I'm absolutely delighted at the initial response so far with pilots expressing their interest in joining the 2-4-CIX aerobatic team. So for team role call we have so far: Myself, Tony Driver, Peter Dodds, Peter Chapman, Don Fraser, Richard Sinclair, Steve Banks and Adam Walker. I'm sure this list will increase as time goes on.

I want to arrange the first introduction session for Sunday 18th Feb 10:30 for around 2 hrs. Please would you report for duty by 10:30. at Gloucester airfield EGBJ. I do not expect any ATC cover at this time and to be honest at this stage it's not necessary. I appreciate it would be nice to have everything as realistic as possible but we have to work within the confines of FS and online restrictions therefore please would you all ensure you have nil weather set, including winds. The vis range I would suggest in the range of 40 to 80 miles at least then the horizon will have a realistic look about it. Comms will be through TS. For those who have it, TrackIR will be of benefit.

The program for this session is to begin with formation practice and ground  observation and photo shots. I appreciate not all will be able to attend but I would ask every effort be made for this first organised event. I already know there will be some but those unable to attend, could you kindly let me know via a PM.

Spectators are most welcome.

One final note! The organizer of the Sywell Air show has an open invitation to attend any of our training sessions and has requested me to be advised when we do train. So he may turn up un announced. Lets take pride in what we do. Make CIX VFR Club stand out from the crowd and dress to impress :-)

Initial Practice
Despite having got off to a slow start I'm encouraged at the possibilities ahead. So far we have managed a number of formation flights with 2 & 3 ship formations piloted by myself, Peter D & Pete C with the Tiger Moths. In addition Peter D and I have begun a 'Synchronized Pair' display with opposing fly pasts. It is hoped to expand on this on future training sessions. One of the challenges is to achieve closer formation, but this is proving difficult due to the limitations of the online pilot clients. Experiments are ongoing at this time so hopefully we shall find a solution in due course.
