Briefing JULY 2025
Overview

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh - often simply "Oshkosh" - is the world's largest annual general aviation event, held each summer (July 21 - July 27) at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Featuring over 10,000 aircraft and attracting over 600,000 visitors, it is a magnet for aviation enthusiasts from around the globe.
Visitors can fly to the event using a number of different arrivals, including the iconic "Fisk" and "Warbird" arrivals. All arrivals are set out in Air Venture notice.

Scenario

Your mission is to fly to the event following one or more of the published arrivals and park in the club's allocated area (grass on the west side of taxiway P opposite taxiway P4).
You might consider joining one of these organised events:

These focus on the Fisk and Warbird arrivals, but there are also ultra-light, helicopter and Seaplane options to choose from as well.

Start Time and Place

Between 7th and 27th July

Flight Planning

Whichever option you decide upon, make sure you prepare properly, read the notice, and fly in accordance with the requirements set out in it.
You can choose any starting point you want provided you land at Oshkosh. A suggested routing is:

This event encompasses every type of aircraft flown in the club and it is suggested that the weekly group flights take a holiday from their normal routines and fly into Oshkosh in the week of 14 July whilst AirVenture is running.
PilotEdge publish full scenery packs for all supported simulators for SimVenture. There are also free scenery packs available for X-Plane and MSFS. Installing one of these is strongly recommended.

What Aircraft can I fly

Any aircraft in the GA or warbird category including helicopters and light twins. Review the requirements of the AirVenture notice to ensure your chosen aircraft is permitted and able to fly your chosen arrival.

Weather or not?

Before starting, check the weather. In accordance with VATSIM rules the wind direction should be the same as real-world. This event is strictly VFR, so all other aspects of the weather should be adjusted to avoid the disappointment of being rained or fogged in.

Airmanship

This event should be fun for all, both pilots and controllers. If your enjoyment is impaired by "unsportsmanlike" ATC, let someone know so senior club members can pass on your concerns.
If you get something wrong, such as entering controlled airspace without authority, learn from the experience and follow instructions - even if requested to 'disconnect'.
Don't forget it is better to ask a club member or ATC when unsure rather than flying on causing confusion and mayhem!

ATC

If flying in the SimVenture or VATVenture events follow the instructions of ATC using the procedures set out in the Air Venture notice. Otherwise, be alert to live ATC when you are flying and remember to use the correct CTAF frequencies as per the requirements of VATSim USA.
If flying the "fisk" arrival with no ATC you should announce "landing long" or "landing short" rather than using coloured dots to enable multiple aircraft to land at the same time.

Radio Discipline

Take care not to let our TeamSpeak Chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive and then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". If anyone hears R/T which appears to be ignored and it is a club member being called, on TeamSpeak, say "ATC is calling XXXX/one of us". Then everyone stop talking until ATC calls again and makes contact. Remember that if ATC tells you "standby" It means "wait, don't call me, I will come back to you as soon as I can."

Club Star Award

Star is awarded for a landing at Wittman Regional Airport (KOSH) between 7th and 27th July.
