Briefing September 2025
Overview

A regularity rally is a race with a difference. Instead of going as fast as possible and crossing the finishing line first, each competitor is measured by how closely they adhere to an agreed set of arrival times at a set of checkpoints. This event pits each competitor against the clock with only the precision of their planning and execution standing between them and victory or defeat.

Scenario

Having completed your flight planning, set your start time, make a note of expected arrival times at each waypoint and fly the route. You need to take steps to record your actual times at each waypoint. There are 3 options for this:

  1. If you use Microsoft Windows, you can use the CIX Flight Logger and 'CIX Time Trial - Check Times.exe' capture how you get on.
  2. If you fly X-Plane 11 or 12 on any platform you can use the CIX TimeTrial.lua FlyWithLua script to record actual times.
  3. Use a stopwatch.
To make the flight more challenging, why not set your rolling map solution aside and just use heading and time for the flight.
This event is just for fun and is a good test of the precision of your planning and flying skills.
Good luck!

Start Time and Place

Any time in September 2025, fly together or go solo.

Flight Planning

The route and altitude requirements of the rally are set out in this table:

WaypointLatitudeLongitudeNotes
EGPH55.9500° N -3.3725° W Start
EGFRO56.0061° N -3.4039° W Pass at 1,000 feet
FOYLE56.1428° N -4.3823° W Climb to 3,000 feet
NEVIS56.6954° N -4.5446° W Maintain 3,000 feet
NESDI57.1217° N -4.1468° W Climb to 5,000 feet
ASNUD56.6942° N -3.0557° W Climb to 6,000 feet
EGPT56.4411° N -3.3739° W Finish with overhead join

Plan carefully taking into account weather conditions and the performance of your aircraft.

What Aircraft can I fly

Any aircraft in the GA or warbird category including helicopters and light twins.

Weather or not?

Before starting, check the weather. In accordance with VATSIM rules the wind direction should be the same as real-world. This event is strictly VFR, so all other aspects of the weather should be adjusted to avoid the disappointment of being rained or fogged in.

Airmanship

This event should be fun for all, both pilots and controllers. If your enjoyment is impaired by "unsportsmanlike" ATC, let someone know so senior club members can pass on your concerns.

If you get something wrong, such as entering controlled airspace without authority, learn from the experience and follow instructions - even if requested to 'disconnect'.

Don't forget it is better to ask a club member or ATC when unsure rather than flying on causing confusion and mayhem!

ATC

Always be alert for live ATC when you are flying. If flying without air traffic control remember to announce your intentions on Unicom.

There is often ATC at Edinburgh so be prepared to request a VFR departure via the Forth Bridge to keep on track and don't forget to pay attention to altitude restrictions as you leave the Edinburgh area.

Radio Discipline

Take care not to let our TeamSpeak Chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive, and then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". This is difficult because when talking on TeamSpeak you cannot hear the R/T. So be aware that ATC might be trying to contact a member. If anyone hears R/T which appears to be ignored and it is a club member being called, on TS, say "ATC is calling XXXX/one of us". Then everyone stop talking until ATC calls again and makes contact. Remember that if ATC tells you "stand bye" It means "Wait, don't call me, I will come back to you as soon as I can.".

Club Star Award

Half a star is awarded for departing Edinburgh (EGPH), the other half for a landing at Perth Scone (EGPT) sometime in September 2025.
