| Briefing | April 2026 |
| Overview | Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo has grown into one of the largest and most successful aviation events on earth.
It is Florida's largest annual convention of any kind, and each year over 200,000 visitors flock to what has become known as "Aviation's Season Opener"
or "Spring Break for Pilots." |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Scenario | Your mission is to fly to the event following one or more of the published arrivals and park in the club's allocated area
(GA Camp Area south of the VOR). |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Start Time and Place |
Fly between 13th and 26th April, you can start from any local airport
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Flight Planning |
Read the NOTAMs carefully and plan a flight using either
If possible, arrange your flight time to fly with others, a crowded approach is more challenging and fun. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What Aircraft can I fly |
Any aircraft in the GA or warbird category including helicopters and light twins. Review the requirements of the Sun 'n Fun notice to ensure your chosen aircraft is permitted and able to fly your chosen arrival. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Weather or not? |
Before starting, check the weather. In accordance with VATSIM rules the wind direction should be the same as real-world. This event is strictly VFR, so all other aspects of the weather should be adjusted to avoid the disappointment of being rained or fogged in. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Airmanship | This event should be fun for all, both pilots and controllers. If your enjoyment is impaired by "un-sportsmanlike" ATC, let someone know so senior club members can pass on your concerns. If you get something wrong, such as entering controlled airspace without authority, learn from the experience and follow instructions - even if requested to 'disconnect'. Don't forget it is better to ask a club member or ATC when unsure rather than flying on causing confusion and mayhem! |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ATC | If flying in the VATUSA Sun 'n Fun event, follow the instructions of ATC using the procedures set
out in the NOTAM. Otherwise, be alert to live ATC when you are flying and remember to use the correct CTAF frequencies as per the requirements of VATUSA. |

| Radio Discipline |
Take care not to let our TeamSpeak Chat cut across ATC. Stop any conversation immediately the R/T comes alive, and then continue if "he wasn't talking to us". This is difficult because when talking on TeamSpeak you cannot hear the R/T. So be aware that ATC might be trying to contact a member. If anyone hears R/T which appears to be ignored and it is a club member being called, on TS, say "ATC is calling XXXX/one of us". Then everyone stop talking until ATC calls again and makes contact. Remember that if ATC tells you "standby" It means "Wait, don't call me, I will come back to you as soon as I can." - Busy with a more urgent problem. |

| Club Star Award |
File a PIREP for the event day as usual. To get your Star all flights must take place between 13th and 26th April and terminate at Lakeland Linder Airport (KLAL). |
